Collagen and elastin are proteins found naturally in our bodies that support the skin. The supply of collagen and elastin typically decrease with age leading to decreased elasticity of the skin, sagging, wrinkles, and lines.
Microneedling is a procedure that promotes the production of new collagen and elastin by creating small micropunctures in the skin. The production of these healing agents thickens the skin thereby reducing scars and improving skin texture, firmness, and hydration.
Microneedling is used to treat a variety of facial conditions including:
Dr. Munroe will discuss your treatment goals and help determine the number of treatments you will need.
Microneedling procedures take about 30 minutes to perform. A topical anesthetic cream is first applied to minimize any discomfort during the procedure. A pen-like tool, called a derma roller, is used to create tiny punctures in the skin in a precise manner. This device is rolled over the skin multiple times. You may experience a little tingling sensation during the procedure but no discomfort.
You may have mild redness in the treated area for up to 5 days. You may also notice other mild reactions including burning, tightness, and skin flaking. You will be able to resume your normal activities immediately after treatment. Heavy activity and exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours.
You may see some improvement immediately, but most treatments take 3-6 months for the effects to become visible.
Most patients will get their best results after 3-6 treatments. Once your desired results are achieved, you should continue to schedule touch up treatments to maintain the results.
