Facial Spots & Blotches

Various types of pigmented spots can arise on your face and eyelid throughout your life. They are usually due to an increase in melanin, a brown pigment naturally found in your skin.

There are several different types of facial spots including:

  • Freckles
  • Sun or Age Spots (solar lentigo)
  • Melasma

Freckles typically appear earlier in life and are more noticeable in the summer months. They are often seen in lighter color skin. Sun spots are caused by UV light from exposure to the sun and are more common in adults. They typically persist throughout the year although may fade slightly in the winter months. Melasma is a chronic skin disorder that gives rise to diffuse patches of pigment on the skin. Melasma can be triggered by sun exposure, pregnancy, and certain medications.
